My Sister's House...Original Hardwood Floors & Beautiful Old Doors

Hey Everyone!

If you have been keeping up with the blog, you know that I have been talking about & sharing pictures of my sister's new home!  In my last post, I shared pictures of how we spruced up her entryway, creating a cute & cozy little nook & board/batten wall. In case you missed that post, you can check it out HERE.  Today, I thought I would share some pictures of her living room and the improvements we made there!

Again, because I arrived a day later than everyone else, the work had already began in this room....

This room was a cream color to start with, matching the color of the woodwork that you see in these pictures. Craig (my sister's boyfriend) had requested that the living room be painted "white" and being the good girlfriend that she is, Cortney agreed to his request. He pretty much gave her free reign throughout the rest of the house, so I guess she thought she better make him happy & paint the living room "white."

She started off just using a basic white paint that she bought at Walmart in their previous hometown. She gave the walls two coats of paint and then realized they were going to need one more. So, she got in the car & drove to the Walmart in their new hometown, only to discover that they didn't have a paint department! Uggh! Not wanting to drive 45 minutes back to their previous hometown, she headed to another local home improvement store & bought the white paint that they had available. You can see in this picture the difference between the the two shades....Double UGGH!!! So this room ended up with 4 coats of paint before it was all said & done!!

After finishing up with all the painting, it was time to move in their furniture!  They had planned on leaving & using the existing carpet in this room until they decided to take a peek underneath.....

HOLY.......HARDWOOD.....BATMAN!!
Not only was there hardwood floors underneath the carpet, they appeared to be finished & in FANTASTIC CONDITION!!

So, the men got to work & started taking up the carpet.....

And this is what they were left with.....

Can you believe it?!
Who on earth would cover up such BEAUTIFUL FLOORS?!

Once the carpeting was up, we all got to work removing all of the staples from the floor & tack strip from the outer edges of the room...

Because the trim throughout the room had been painted after the carpet went down, we could see that the baseboards were definitely going to need a fresh coat of paint. The trim throughout the entire room was given a new coat of paint as a result! In addition to painting the trim, quarter round was later placed throughout the room between the baseboard & flooring just to give the room a more finished look & to hide any gaps between the floor & baseboards.

When all of the tack strip & staples were up, Cortney washed the floors down with Murphy's Oil Soap & a damp rag to clean them up a bit....

Here is a shot of the floors with all of the staples up....

Not too shabby, eh?!
I love how the hardwood opens up this room & makes everything look so much brighter! And now they don't have to worry about new carpeting or laying new floors!! What a blessing!!

I had mentioned in my post on Wednesday, that the house was built in 1955 and as a result, there is so much character in this home!! Not only does it have the original (and gorgeous) hardwood flooring, but the house also has all of the original doors throughout!! I don't know about all of you, but I heart old doors!!

The most beautiful door in the whole house, is of course, this pretty little thing in the living room....

This door leads out onto their screened-in porch on the side of their home. I love 12 pane window & all of the light it brings into the space!

ALL of the doors in the house have these gorgeous glass knobs too....

 Aren't they SO CUTE?!

When all of the trim work in the living room got its fresh coat of paint, this door got a little facelift as well....

Doesn't it look pretty in its new creamy shade?!
LOVE IT!!

Do you love old doors?!

Have you ever taken up carpet & found beautiful hardwood flooring underneath?!

That's all I have to share for now! I wasn't able to get a picture of the room (as a whole) with the furniture in it, because the entire time we were there it looked like a construction zone! My mom & my sister hung curtains & put up all of the wall decor after I left, so I promise to snap some pictures on my next visit unless I can get Cortney to send me some pics between now & then!

Thanks for stopping by & I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!

  4. I have original hardwood flooring in my house and it was under carpet when the previous homeowner bought it. She removed it from every room but our TV room where it's glued down inch by inch. It's also in our kitchen but it's underneath tile and some sort of backer type board that the tile is on. I'd love to rip it out and find out what's under there by hubs says no right now (we'll eventually do it when we redo our kitchen). I love hardwood floors and original wood!

  6. We had to do the same with our wood floors which were covered up by carpet. Just a little tip. To get them to shine and look new without refinishing, get Holloway House Quick Shine. The stuff is amazing! For so long I tried everything to get them to shine, look clean and not be sticky but nothing worked. This was the only thing that worked. I bought mine at Walgreens but I think they sell it at tons of stores. Hopefully that helps!

  11. The same thing happened to me an old lady lived in my house that was built in may of 1955 she had shag carpet laid down in 1958. i got the house for 15,000 dollars cuz they said it needed updating little did they know simply unmolested is worth more in mint condition. I pulled the 53 yer old shag carpet up to discover hardwood floors a beautiful rich yellow orange color in basically mint condition. the best thing was the shag carpet was mint too and a collector bought that off me for good money. buy houses from old folks cuz you will get a jewel.

It's triggered by the passion communicated in the post I looked at. And on this article "My Sister's House.

Is it just me or do some of these responses look like coming from brain dead folks? :-P And, if you are writing at additional online sites, I'd like to follow you.
