Okay, so after seeing my mom's beautiful kitchen remodel & seeing how big of a transformation she was able to make with so little money, I decided to do a little remodel of my own....
Just to give you an idea of what the kitchen looked like before.....

Pretty uninspiring, huh? I know, I know...I'm surprised I tolerated it as long as I did! Plain countertops and that awful sink & faucet...I was definitely in need of a makeover!
Because I don't enjoy painting as much as my mom, I decided to start my remodel by replacing my countertops, sink, & faucet. I was able to by the countertop at Lowe's for less than $100! You can buy the countertop in pre-cut sections by size. I had to purchase one 10 foot section, and one 6 foot section. The sink & faucet was where the majority of my money was spent. These two items ran me close to $400!

I have to admit, the new countertops, sink, & faucet made a huge difference in the kitchen, but I still wasn't quite satisfied.....cue PAINT!

We started by taking the cabinet doors off of all the cabinets, then we removed all the hardware. We sanded all of the cabinet surfaces and then cleaned all of them with a special cleaner to get all the grease and residue off. Then we primed the cabinet with KILZ2 primer. After priming, all cabinets and doors were given 4 coats of paint (waiting 4 hours between coats). We used a latex, semi-gloss paint. Oil-based paint also works well and is actually more durable, but the home improvement store we used only carried the oil-based paint in a high gloss finish, which we did not want, so latex paint was our next option. My mom used this in her kitchen remodel and it is holding up well. After the cabinet doors were finished, the hinges were put back on & my new hardware was added. And then we re-hung all of the doors.
And this is what my kitchen looks like now.....

Ahhhhh...Now that's what I was looking for!!!!!!
New Hardware
Love my drawer handles!!!!
And LOVE my new sink & faucet!!!!!
Talk about a transformation....let's see the before & afters AGAIN......

Needless to say.....I LOVE my new kitchen & I am looking forward to doing some holiday baking in it! This was just the inspiration I needed!
Cost for the primer & paint totaled $40 and my new hardware was $50 at Target. If you have any other questions regarding this project, please contact us or leave it in the comments section! Thank You!!!

Hope you are all having a very Happy Holiday Season!!!!!

Wow Tonya! The transformation is amazing and I'm impressed! I used to have a house with old dark cabinets, but I paid someone to paint them because I didn't think I could do it. You've given me the inspiration to try it myself in my current home. I probably won't start right away, but when I do I'll probably call you for more tips! Thanks for sharing. Pam Sparling
ReplyDeleteWow! it is amazing! That should win an award with the little money that it took for such a transformation!
ReplyDeleteThanks Girls!
ReplyDeletevery VERY nice. I love white kitchens. So classic. I would say you significantly boosted the value of your home.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your kitchen! We are moving and I'm painting my new kitchen cabinets white... I can't wait!!!! This is just what I'm picturing it to look like! Great job!
ReplyDeleteLove your new kitchen! The transformation is amazing!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful transformation! Congratulations - you must be loving it!
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!! Love the white and contrast with the countertops!
ReplyDeleteMy kitchen layout is very similar to yours, and I'm looking to purchase new countertops. I got a quote at a local surplus store which is supposedly cheaper than Lowes. My quote was $213 for a 10' and 6' piece, even without end caps. They led me to believe I was getting a great deal, but I'm baffled to read that yours were only $80! Details, please (via email: shelliehoward@live.com). :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I love the transformation that a little white paint (or a LOT of white paint :-) can make! We also painted our kitchen cabinets white, and I have not regretted it one minute!! Thanks for letting me peek inside your pretty kitchen.
ReplyDeleteAmazing transformation. I can't believe how little you spent on paint. Great job, I love it. I can so see doing tons of holiday baking in that lovely kitchen.
ReplyDeleteGlad I found your blog...now following. Hugs-Carrie
Wow what transformation it looks amazing !!
ReplyDeleteCan I just ask if your units were wood to begin with or a laminate wood effect.
Lisa :)
Great job, wow, such a dramatic change! It looks beautiful now!
ReplyDeleteYou are so brave to paint your cabinets but it makes such a difference! Do you want to come paint mine? :-)
This looks fantastic. I love the transformation of paint. And for such little $$$. Thanks for sharing your project.

I just had to pop over, after you shared your link on The Inspired Room, and WOW, what a beautiful transformation, oh, this is making me want to plunge into repainting mine. Decisions, decisions, *sigh*!
ReplyDeleteGreat job, love your new sink and countertops too. You brave woman, you, I need some courage to just go ahead and do what I know needs to be done.
Maybe someone asked this already, but were/are your cabinets solid(real) oak? I have custom oak cabinets and have been told over and over that the grain will show through if I paint them white. I want a white kitchen, but am afraid to start for fear of what they say is true. Any tips?

ReplyDeleteWhat a great transformation. I did a similar thing to our old house and painting the cabinets made such a huge difference. What at total pain though! The whole space looks totally new, great job.

So impressed! Not only is your kitchen beautiful now, but it sounds like you got amazing deals!
ReplyDeleteI am (hoping) to start painting our cabinets really soon but we have a counter top with wood edges and strange tile. I want to replace it all but don't think we can right now. Except, you said you replaced yours for only $80?! Our kitchen is tiny. PLEASE tell me what you did/what kind of countertops you put in! Did you have to make the hole for the sink? Help! We have a baby due in less than 6 weeks and I will have to do everything myself so any help is so appreciated!

super, super, super
ReplyDeleteTHE TRANSFORMATION TURNED OUT GREAT LOVE IT.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to paint our cabinets white as well...but have been afraid of the process and if they would turn out looking "right." Did you just use plain white paint? Not an off-white, etc.? (I'd love to know the exact color/brand if you recall...)
ReplyDeleteI've also wanted to replace our countertop as well. I love the countertop you chose and was wondering if you could tell me the name of the countertop? I know it came from Lowe's but anything more specific would be wonderful!
Thanks!

Your kitchen remodel is beautiful. You mentioned using a product to get rid of the grease build-up on the cabinets and I was curious what you used. I also am curious for more information on what type of countertop you got from Lowe's for that price quote. Again, beautiful kitchen - well done! :) Kim

WOW - your kitchen turned out great. I love the white color that you chose!

I just found your blog today and went back through old posts until there were no more. Love living through both of your house transformations. We have been working on an addition that will more than double our house for about four years already. We still have about a year left (doing it very slowly ourselves) and I have so many diy ideas. Thanks for sharing more.
ReplyDeleteI have to ask... where did you put your microwave??? A kitchen looks so much nicer without the microwave and coffee maker, but I haven't found a good solution for that yet.
What a difference... love your kitchen.
That looks really nice! We painted our kitchen cabinets white, too, and it really brightened up the room.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your kitchen transformation. We are going to start our kitchen remodel soon. I love the white and love, love the hardware!
ReplyDeleteI love the transformation! Our countertops were damaged by the dishwasher installer. The company is going to replace them, but unless I want white builder grade laminate again, I have to pay the upcharge. So unfair considering the hassle and inconvenience I'm going to endure while they replace everything. How did you get your countertop so cheaply? What brand and color did you choose? It looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the help,
Colleen

Also curious about what you used to clean the cabinets, the color you used and if your cabinets are true oak? Thanks so much (rcolaianni76@gmail.com)
ReplyDeleteI Love it! But I'm dying to know if the cabinets are chipping at all? We just moved into a place 6mo ago and the painted cabinets looked fabulous when we moved in...now just 6months later they seems to be chipping and no longer look very nice. My MIL also painted her a year or so ago and they are experiencing the same problem. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Thank you. wendyfiles@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this! We are preparing to redo our kitchen as we speak, and this is exactly the look I'm going for! Our kitchens are almost identical, and I'm hoping ours turns out as well as yours. Could you please tell me which color countertop (Madura gold)? And which paint brand and color you used. I'm having such a hard time deciding on a white for the cabinets! Our walls will be Benjamin Moore shaker beige. My email is marenkate41@hotmail.com Thank you so much!!!

I love your kitchen! What color did you use for your cabinets? And what is the product you used to remove grease and grime from the cabinets? :-)
